Barclays announces closure of second branch NEAR PARK WARD and now TSB SET TO CLOSE MILLFIELD BRANCH
Bosses at Barclays have announced the closure of a second branch in our area. The bank is looking to shut its outlet in Eastfield Road on 8th January next year.
The announcement comes just days after the bank revealed it was planning to close its branch in Lincoln Road Millfield on 14th January.
A Barclays spokesperson said: “The decision to close a branch is never an easy one but there has been a 25 per cent reduction in counter transactions in the two years to March 2020."
Peterborough MP Paul Bristow said:
“If they close this and the Lincoln Road branch they will lose any right to say they care about their customers in Peterborough.”
In addition bosses at the TSB bank have announced they are to shut one of their branches in Peterborough. The bank in Lincoln Road, in Millfield Park Ward, has been earmarked for closure early next year as part of a nationwide cull of TSB outlets.
Action Team Leader John Peach said: "This is a bitter double blow for local people in Millfield and our area. Our campaign will go on and now also focus on TSB. It makes me think that these high street banks see Millfield as an easy target, populated by people who won’t complain. Neighbourhoods with many who have English as an additional language and short-term renters. I am going to call this out for what it is. A betrayal of a community and a high street for short term financial gain.
I urge both banks to reconsider. Bank bosses should join me on a walkabout on Lincoln Road and see for themselves what their penny pinching is doing to a community”
Meanwhile Barclays Bank have started a 12 week consultation on the closure of their branch in Millfield. This is in the Park Ward area of the city on the corner of Lincoln Road and Stone Lane.
The bank is heavily used by local residents from our area, also local small businesses in the Millfield area, those businesses often privately and family run enterprises that rely on the bank to a heavier degree than multiple stores. It’s particularly used for depositing and taking out cash and handing in cheques.
Many local residents rely on the Barclays bank branch at Millfield as they often have no knowledge or facilities to use Internet banking.
Paul Bristow MP and Action Team Leader John Peach went on a walk about recently getting people to sign the petition to help save the bank.
Action Team Leader John Peach said: "Paul Bristow and I are heading up the campaign to stop the bank closing and they’re asking for support from local residents and local businesses in the surrounding areas."

Barclays should not close their Lincoln Road branch. The impact on vulnerable people living locally will be severe. I will work with residents and the Chair of ‘Save Barclays Bank Millfield Campaign’ John Peach and Vice Chairs Shazia Bashir and Ishfaq Hussain to reverse this poor decision.
